Adding new items to a ruin

To add an item you have found whilst exploring a ruin (not from auto-searching the zone!) go to the ruin's page, and from there use the infobox links (v, e) to edit the metadata list, you will need to add a new list item and increase the total item count. If you are unsure how to edit the metadata add the item directly to the ruin page and let someone know it needs copying to the data. Discordance 20:37, 10 October 2011 (PDT)

Maybe it is a good idea to have some sort of count number besides found items, to know probability of item drop? LoremIpsum 02:34, 8 November 2011 (PST)
I was planning on setting up something like this, probably after I finish organizing the Weapon Testing Tables. Small admin.gif Mazt 04:39, 8 November 2011 (PST)
For now please put drop testing on the talk pages. Small admin.gif Discordance 12:29, 12 December 2011 (PST)

Old talk

Discuss anything related to the special zones page here...

Looted Supermarket seems to not contain very many resources. Approximately 9 people searched it and it was depleted. -KingCrizzo

  • I'll add this under the "Looted Supermarket" info (you can do that yourself next time if you want =) ). Either you guys had extremely bad luck or its one of those special locations that are rather shitty :p -Dimatarion

I just found Dried Marshmallows in a looted supermarket, but I noticed that it isn't listed under Looted Supermarket, or on the Dried Marshmallow page. Want to add it, or do you wait for confirmation from others first? Just a newbie offering -- Samthetrue March 24th, 2011

Anyone have any accounts of special zones becoming undepleted? Does the zone become undepleted and the building remains empty or do both become searchable again?

  • Yes, special zones do get undepleted. -MassaHunter 7 February 2011

This was posted under Water Processing Plant: "Is this the old water proc plant?"

  • The one I saw was just "Water Processing Plant," I've never seen the "Old" version. The blurb is from that find in Desert of Howls, Day 1.--DeadLucky 09:48, 11 January 2011 (PST)

Updated list with recent finds, also I've noticed in my last 3 towns we had exactly 10 buildings on the map... is this is a standard number then or is it random? -- Lemming 03:12, 25 January 2011 (PST)

My current town has 10 Discordance 06:38, 25 January 2011 (PST)
Started a thread on the forums and at least 5 more towns confirm 10 of these zones. Lemming 11:40, 25 January 2011 (PST)

I'm happy to report, that everyone will be happy to read, that hacksaw (broken) can be found at a home depot. Just found it myself along with a repair kit (mentioned) and a jerrycan (not mentioned).

started topics

Some of the individual pages have been started by people.

  • I'm going to start working on this, I've updated all of the previous zones and will add to the list as I create more pages. --Mazt 16:46, 2 July 2011 (PDT)

Split Article?

As noted above, people are starting individual pages for each site. I think this is a good idea and suggest we split all locations into their own page, using this for an "overview" type of page.

thoughts? --Poposhka 12:41, 7 February 2011 (PST)

  • Isn't just better to redirect all of them to specific paragraph on this page? Chali 16:06, 7 February 2011 (PST)
No eventually each should have its own page. I don't think this page should change much from what it is now, but perhaps we can condense the information and remove the blurbs. Until the individual pages are written a redirect to here is a good start. Discordance 16:54, 7 February 2011 (PST)

I like the format used on the french wiki. I've started collecting pictures of the different buildings so we can include them in the articles in some form. Maybe we could turn this page more into one large table that displays just the basic info about each building (name, what is found) and includes a link to the individual page. That would be a lot neater than the current format and we could move the blurb out of this page and onto the individual buildings pages then. -- Lemming 03:10, 9 February 2011 (PST)

Maybe we should merge all individual pages of special zones to this one with redirects, that way we could update information just in one place and get rid of a lot of confusion? --LoremIpsum 06:01, 24 September 2011 (PDT)

I finally got the table done, i've left the blurbs in for now if someone else wants to try removing them give it a try. As for the information being confused, yes that is a problem although fairly common for wikis. There is something i'm going to try with metadata soon which may solve the problem, otherwise I think its something that we will have to deal with, its more useful having the separate pages and this page. Discordance 12:45, 27 September 2011 (PDT)

I've setup the metadata for ruins, at least in part. See Ruins/draft for the table setup, Abandoned Construction Site for the ruin page setup, and Data:Abandoned Construction Site for the metadata. Discordance 17:21, 27 September 2011 (PDT)
This is awesome, but we could rid off unnecessary information such as blurb, leave it in main article, *Ruins* should be Name - items found ( and maybe percentages of most likely item drop ). --LoremIpsum 05:48, 2 October 2011 (PDT)
Yeah they probably should be removed I just left them in as they were already there. When I have more time to work on Ruins/draft i'll take them out but go ahead and do it now if you like. Discordance 07:59, 4 October 2011 (PDT)
Done, now table looks too big, could we compact it somehow?--LoremIpsum 05:31, 7 October 2011 (PDT)

I've got a little trouble with the data, the buildings that have more than 12 items ont hem only list 12...so some items are just cut. Is there a way to allow the data to show them? --Binks92 18:56, 07 october 2011, (PDT)

Yeah, I just need to adjust some templates, how many items need to show? Discordance 04:29, 9 October 2011 (PDT)

I've increased the display to 20 items, let me know if it needs to be set any higher. Discordance 07:05, 9 October 2011 (PDT)

Rename

The name of this page has been screaming at me to be changed for sometime. Special Zones are those zones which contain the buildings, this page deals primarily with the buildings. I have a few ideas for a new name.

  • Outside Buildings - the only mention in the official help calls them this.
  • Zone Buildings - from the XML structure
  • Ruins - to differentiate better from buildings in town and this word just about applies to stuff like crashed vehicles, when building is totally wrong.

Discordance 06:29, 31 July 2011 (PDT)

With the introduction of Abandoned Buildings, some people have referred to these as "ruins". May be confusing to refer to normal "special zones" as ruins also, maybe not --Tamle 22:53, 25 November 2011 (PST)

The in-game help refers to the new ones both as ruins, buildings, abandoned buildings, abandoned ruins and a bunch of other terms, so theres no help there. They are however a subset of ruins in that they share the numbering of ruins, the xml, and are in the same flash sprite. So I was thinking of distinguishing them with Explorable Ruins. Abandoned ruin is another term used in the game but theres too many abandoned ruins already that are just named that way and you can't go inside, its ashame they didn't rename the other ones so abandoned could be the word associated with them. Ruins by distance

Ruins are found within certain distance ranges. [1]. Some investigation has already been done by a few people we need to work this into the page now. Discordance 05:26, 11 October 2011 (PDT)

I've set up a spreadsheet to gather data on this, as well as a few other things. It's easier to keep it all in one place, rather than each individual talk page. If anyone has any tests already started, feel free to take over. Small admin.gif Mazt 07:23, 20 November 2011 (PST)

What happened to the spreadsheet? --Julia 19:49, 25 November 2012 (PST)
Inactivity, lack of care, accidentally deleting it, or something along these lines. It's been a year, and no updates means a chance of losing the document...--Small admin.gif Nickyh 00:11, 26 November 2012 (PST)
That sucks. The weapons spreadsheet is gone too... Double suck. --Julia 04:57, 26 November 2012 (PST)

Re-confirm ruin items?

It seems that some ruins are starting to yield a possibility of more than 20 and even 30 items. I'm starting to think Twinoid removed some of them in Season 6, rather than only add new ones. Should we start trying to confirm the possible ruin finds? --Small admin.gif Nickyh 03:02, 8 January 2013 (PST)

Impossible to load

By my assumptions this page contains an element that makes it impossible to load. Not sure if I'm the only one, but when I try to go to this page, it keeps loading until it hits the timeout and outputs one of these, and more:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/die2nitewiki/die2nitewiki.com/w/includes/MagicWord.php on line 616
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/die2nitewiki/die2nitewiki.com/w/includes/GlobalFunctions.php on line 2756

--Bekey 01:48, 14 April 2013 (PDT)

I have not encountered such a problem before, but the general status of this site is not looking good: many pages cannot load for me, and so I must assume that the bandwidth for this site is not sufficient for the amount of users. I'm sorry but I cannot assist you with technical difficulties. It is beyond my abilities. --Small admin.gif Nickyh 08:05, 14 April 2013 (PDT)
I understand the bandwidth issue, 500-Errors aren't uncommon around here lately. All I'm saying is that this particular page seems to have severe issues, beyond the 500-internal error. I will try and pinpoint which element is causing troubles and I believe, if you don't have the same issue it must be because of your cache. I do not see how it could be a client-side issue with me. (on another note, have you thought about moving hosts?? Dreamhost has been exceptionally nice and strong to me, up until the database leak a year ago.) --Bekey 09:07, 14 April 2013 (PDT)

Once again, I must apologize, because I am a user promoted admin, and the only active one at this stage. Cursoe (owner of the site) and other "real" admins haven't appeared in a long time, so it's really just me running this place - kind of like an hired librarian but not the actual owner. In other words, I cannot do anything technical like relocate the host, attempt to access the Ruins page without running into the same error as you (at last it "loaded"), or anything beyond editing the wiki (plus ban users, I guess). I'll attempt to contact Cursoe, though. Also I'm guessing the Ruins page is currently too large to load before failing. --Small admin.gif Nickyh 01:16, 15 April 2013 (PDT)

Oh right, it slipped my mind that you're not the owner. Thanks for your work and staying active, though. Much appreciated :)
That's a good guess, it probably is too large, yes. Oh well. --Bekey 04:02, 15 April 2013 (PDT)
