Have you ever heard of dowsing? It is to use an odd looking tool which resembles a forked metal rod to find underground water. Using the same idea, if we build a pair of gigantic divining rods, we might be able to locate a large water reserve. The idea is absurd even for a post-apocalypse world, but the important part is that it works.
