“Mommie.” he whispered in her ear. Her eyes fluttered for a moment, she moaned rolling over to her side, smiling at her little boy.
“Hey sweetie.” He held out a small canteen light with water, “Just put it beside me baby, I’m not thirsty.” She wasn’t, been days since she needed a drink. One his knees he shook the canteen a little, his eyes narrow with worry. She took the can and sipped it. The water burned down her throat and she coughed violently, spilling water everywhere. Specks of blood spotted the floor of plastic.
Sitting down cross-legged, the son looked at her hot face, wet brown hair, her torn uniform and the gaping wound on her leg.

Holding the tears back, he hid his face from her, breathing his thumping heart in deep. He told nobody in the shack town about the wound, he knew there was nothing they could do, they would just kill her. She let her head rest on the dusty plastic of the dark green tent, it crinkled a little. “Baby, go outside and help the others. Mommy is fine, she just needs to sleep.” He left the tent, careful not to let anyone see inside.
Her whole body was cooking in the dry desert air, sweat came somehow, even though she was empty, she where the water fell on her; patches of swollen and burning skin bubbled up like boils. She knew it wouldn’t be long before she would become a monster, she left the canteen upright and started to moan, no tears came.

Maybe she should let them shoot her in the head, end it all, but quiet like and have them tell her son she died from a fever in the night. Most of them were nice enough people, they let her in with her son, they had clean water, clean clothes; it was somewhere...
