...The zombies notice me and so does Rob. I recognise one of the zombies now, Linda. She wandered out of the town the first night after the event, said something about looking for survivors. Doubt she found any. Rob looks even more terrified, can’t say that I blame him - I’m armed with some prototype alien gun and out of my mind on twinoid. I shout at him, “Duck you stupid bastard!” I think it was a shout, maybe I sang it. Either way he hits the deck, getting a mouthful of sand no doubt. For a moment I wonder what the sand tastes like then I get a grip and fire the Devastator!

It worked better than I hoped; two zombies wasted. I reload as quickly as I can, my hands shaking from the combined effects of twinoid and the desert sun. This time I took careful aim, I aimed for Linda. “Take this you self-righteous, stupid, suicidal bitch!” I screamed. Rob whimpered, I think he thought I meant him, and I fired my super-gun. Two more zombies down. Two of us versus two of them.

For some reason the zombies remain cowardly until midnight. They can’t face being outnumbered and back off whenever they fail to outnumber us by at least 3 to 1. Every midnight they charge at the town gates, like a tide of monsters, but until then they hide from any group of the living.

“Come on, Rob,” I say, “time to go home.”

“Sure,” He says, eyeing my warily. He takes out a flask of water, gulps it down in one go and starts to follow me back home.

We get to the gates with no problems. When we get inside the gates, though we find something awful. Just inside the gates one of our number, don’t remember his name, lies on the ground with his intenstines out. A one-handed gaunt figure was kneeling over him, shovelling the man’s innards into his mouth.

So Jim finally fell to the infection.

There were two of us so he backed off instinctively. We used that to herd him outside the gates and into the desert, then we threw the body out as well.

They’ll both be back at midnight...
